Brilliant suggestion from Greg Heil on FB: Heres a much better idea (that I attribute to an old mentor of mine, Bill Kachmaryk). Lets preserve and renovate the original tower but remove the council chambers from the third floor (where it never belonged) and let that space serve as needed office expansion. Then lets dedicate our design energy toward conceiving a fabulous new glass and steel pavilion of some remarkable geometry (circular, octangular?) that would sit on north-south axis of City Hall Square to the south of the existing building. In it would be housed a dramatic new council chambers designed to meet contemporary needs with state-of-the-art technology. It would link to an entirely renovated ground floor of the main building and possibly include a new underground or sky bridge linkage to the 400 CHS Bldg. The net result would be an architectural expression which combines the iconic expression of the original building with the vibrant contemporary design of the new council chamber pavilion addition...achieved at a fraction of the cost of the commodity 100% replacement building currently being rushed through approvals. For Gods sake...lets stand back and take a second look at this thing...we wont get a second chance!
