Bring the Funk Back Fridays: A Year (or so) of Virtual Crate Digging across Time and Genre (Deep Cut Edition) TODAY: Smoke by the Fania All Stars At the intersection of James Brown Boulevard and Avenida de Willie Colon, the music of the Fania All Stars-- indeed, the entire roster of Fania artists-- is the lost soundtrack of my youth. Before Hip Hop became the music of the streets, it was Fania echoing throughout the Lower East Side: from the Robles barbershop where I swept hair and stocked supplies for my first job, to the Boricua Social Club on the ground floor of my tenement; from bodegas and cars bedecked with Puerto Rican flags and stickers, to bikes with audio equipment MacGyvered on... the congas, the basslines, the horns, FANIA. There have been many reissues of Fania albums in recent years, but they still remain sadly under-known outside of the community. Let the instrumental Smoke get in your ears, and start getting the knowledge. The rest is up to you.
