British Festival to become an annual affair, says Ambassador British Ambassador to Qatar HE Nicholas Hopton has said that he wants more active participation of British individuals and institutions in Qatar including commercial organisations in the next edition of British Festival in Doha. Talking to Qatar Tribune recently on the sidelines of a glitzy celebration of Queen Elizabeths birthday at the British Embassy which also marked the conclusion of the inaugural edition of the showcase of the best of Great Britain, Hopton said that he wanted to see more things happening spontaneously and more momentum building up for the festival from next year onwards. Generally, there has been a very enthusiastic and positive response to the festival from the residents. And this is good reason for us to carry on the festival with our Qatari partners in future also and hold it annually. I am very happy with the range and diversity of programmes across the cultural and commercial sectors, the ambassador said. British Festival 2014, which build up on the success of the 2013 Qatar UK Year of Culture, featured an array of cultural and commercial events and activities. Among the highlights of the British Festival 2014 included an Education Exhibition featuring 22 British universities, launch of a British corner at Qatar University Library and cultural events such us Circle of Sound and street performances by renowned The Urban Playground. Networking events and lectures were also held as part of the programme. The envoy lauded the support of the British community to the initiative, particularly the active participation of a number of British schools. Several members of the British community attended the events such as the fairs hosted by British schools. I attended fairs at the Parkhouse School and the Doha College. This is an illustration of how the school community got involved with the event, Hopton said. He added,Also, there have been a lot of British-flavoured events in hotels such as Grand Hyatt, St Regis and Four Seasons showcasing the British cuisine. All these hotels had planned something or the other as part of their participation in the British Festival. We also had wonderful partnership with malls such as Ezdan and certain supermarkets. The initiative attracted a lot of people and their sales reportedly went up as we were told later, the envoy pointed out. qatar-tribune/viewnews.aspx?n=D7309BC3-9096-41B4-880E-30571F8A260A&d=20140414
