British architect Jeremy Till designed a house and office out of straw bales together with his partner and green architect Sarah Wigglesworth. The intention was to provide a model of sustainable living in an urban setting. A new system of walling was introduced which includes straw bales, recycled concrete used in gabion cages and cement bags to the office elevation in order to reduce noise from the nearby railway. The “Straw Bale house” is a prime example of radical ecological and sustainable architecture in Stock Orchard Street in north London and has won many awards, including the prestigious RIBA Sustainability Prize. This Thursday, three leading international urban thinkers and designers from different generations (Jeremy Till, Dutch architect John Habraken and German architect and founding member of Raumlaborberlin Axel Timm) will share their insights on the role of scarcity in design in the lecture ‘The Design of Scarcity’.
