British blues pioneer Long John Baldry born was Jan. 12, 1941 and left us far too soon in 2003. This song, penned by Ron Davies (no relation to Ray and Dave — this Davies hailed from Shreveport, La.), is nearly as storied as the king of boojie woojie himself. The song was also recorded by Three Dog Night, Dave Edmunds and most notably, David Bowie, for whom it was the ofd-song-out on his 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust.
