British scientists unveil new generation £43m supercomputer that can make a MILLION BILLION calculations a second The ARCHER supercomputer is the UKs most powerful computer system It has three and a half times the speed of previous HECTOR supercomputer The system will support research and industry projects across the countr A brand new supercomputer worth £43million which is capable of more than one million billion calculations every second will be unveiled today. The multi-million pound ARCHER (Academic Research Computing High End Resource) supercomputer will be seen at the University of Edinburgh. It is the most powerful computer system in the UK and will provide high performance computing support for research and industry projects across the country. ARCHER was made by US computing experts Cray. The building housing the ARCHER system is among the greenest computer centres in the world, with cooling costs of only 8p for every £1 spent on power. The machine uses Cray’s XC30 hardware, while its Intel Xeon E5-2600v2 processors provide performance and energy efficiency. It has twin rows of black cabinets - around half of HECTORs 70 - which are supported by the UK Research Data Facility. ARCHER consists of 3008 compute nodes, each one featuring two 12-core E5-2697 v2 (2.7 GHz) Ivy Bridge processors. Standard nodes contain 64GB shared between the two processors and a small number of high-memory nodes that contain 128GB of memory. ARCHER has 84 optical links per group which enables a peak bandwidth of 7,200 GB/a over the whole system.
