Bro Radio News: Council markets Innovation Quarter site to cinema operators The regeneration of Barry’s Innovation Quarter has taken a major step forward with the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s agreement to market the Innovation Quarter’s triangular ‘Southern Development site’ for a range of potential leisure and commercial uses including a cinema. Under the terms of the marketing agreement, possible uses for the site, which is adjacent to the Hydraulic Pumphouse, include financial and professional services, food and drink, business property and floorspace for assembly and leisure. Councillor Lis Burnett, cabinet member for regeneration, commented: “This is an exciting opportunity to further improve on the successful regeneration of the Waterfront area of Barry. A quality development on this site will secure the delivery of a sustainable urban quarter vision for the IQ, boost the local economy and create jobs. It is an ongoing aim of the Council to secure a cinema for Barry and this site would be ideal for such a use.” The Innovation Quarter is a 19-acre mixed use urban quarter located within Barry Waterfront that is being regenerated jointly by the Vale of Glamorgan Council and the Welsh Government. It is well located within the heart of Barry Waterfront alongside the new Quays development and will be within a vibrant area that is set to benefit from the opening of the new link road connecting the Waterfront to Barry Island. To date a number of regeneration projects have been delivered at the Innovation Quarter including the Premier Inn hotel and Brewers Fayre Restaurant, West Quay Medical Centre, the Business Service Centre (with its 15 offices and workshops) and the Skills Training Centre. Contracts have also recently been exchanged with a developer for converting the Hydraulic Pumphouse into an exciting mixed use scheme.
