Bro Radio News: Council responds to Barry Island Pleasure Park planning application The Vale of Glamorgan Council has been working with both the current owners of the Barry Island funfair site and the potential new investor in an attempt to help bring a vibrant fairground back to Barry Island. Following recent developments to the situation key figures within the Vale of Glamorgan Council have made their views clear. Cllr Lis Burnett, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “The Vale Council welcomes the news that an agreement between the current owners of the Barry Island Pleasure Park and a potential investor is very near. We have been working with the interested party for some time to help develop plans for a new funfair for Barry Island. Although progress towards an agreement with the current owners has been slow, and at times frustrating, Council officers have met the investor on several occasions and have played a central role in securing the agreement between the two parties. “For some time we have been justifiably concerned at the condition of the site. The manner in which it has been allowed to fall into disrepair in recent years has been in stark contrast to the Council’s investment in the beach area and the eastern promenade and shelter. This direct investment into the Island is in addition to the resources channelled into improving Maslin Park and the time and effort invested in bringing forward construction of the new link road. Both of which will have a significant impact on improving visitors’ experience of Barry Island. “Given the lack of progress over recent years and the manner in which the current owners have allowed the site to decay into an eyesore, the Council greatly hopes that they can secure this interest so the site can be brought back into beneficial use for the town.” Commenting specifically of the planning application for a residential development on the site which has this week been received Rob Thomas, Director of Development Services, said: “Whilst it is pleasing to at long last see progress being made, it is puzzling that the first phase of the redevelopment of the site is predominantly for housing. “The Vale Council’s goal is to see the site fulfil its potential as a major attraction on Barry Island. We have always acknowledged that a small amount of housing may be appropriate to assist in redeveloping the majority of the site for leisure purposes. However, as we know that the owners are in discussions with a leisure operator whose desire to develop the site has been made clear, we were extremely surprised to see a proposal for housing submitted in advance of wider plans for the fairground site. “Without prejudice to the consideration of the application, we will be speaking to the owners about the need to bring forward a complete set of proposals so that all those with an interest in the site can see clearly what the future may hold.
