Broadcasting says the launch of its new Thor 7 satellite will be accompanied by a shift in its network and data services business towards the maritime and offshore sector. The move far from indicates a departure from the TV business the company has built-in Central & East Europe. The Ku-band payload comprises 11 transponders for the region and also has the further capability of providing restoration capacity of the Thor satellite fleet at 1 West. “The new satellite adds vital growth capacity for our long-standing maritime and energy customers who are currently using our Ku band payloads. Additional applications, including land-based and SNG services will also be accommodated on the Ka-band payload as well as possibility of entering into the aeronautical and governmental vertical sectors, Telenor said in its FSS operators review. In 2013, Telenor secured a significant amount of new business for its maritime services ahead of the Thor 7 launch. Capacity has been pre-sold to Norsk Romsenter. The lifetime lease will provide Norway’s Troll research station in Antarctica with increased satellite capacity for the distribution of key meteorological data from the TrollSat earth station The satellite is slated to launch from Ariane 5 launcher at the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana in Q4, 2014.
