Brodys appointment yesterday did NOT go as we thought it would. - TopicsExpress

Brodys appointment yesterday did NOT go as we thought it would. But, what with Brody ever does?? Brody did his usual, walk and run down the hallway for his doctor. He looks great, his doctor thought so too. Then she examined him. His right side, ankle and foot, PERFECT! His left side is a different story. It has been very stiff since he became ill and had to learn to walk again. I knew that, but we have been working on it, with physical therapy, orthotics, stretches, and his night splints. We thought it was just the foot drop problem he had from being at the first hospital and not having boots on while he was sedated, on the ventilator, and not moving. His doctor said that the foot drop problem should have corrected itself by now. Then she tested his reflexes. He failed them on his left foot. She then told me that there is only one reason for this continued problem. Brody suffered a lack of oxygen to his motor cortex which is why his ankle is so stiff and not responding to reflex exercises. He has brain damage. UMMMMMM, WHAT???? When Brody first arrived to Michigan his oxygen saturation was in the 50s and wouldnt come up because he had so many holes in his lungs, they were just leaking the air instead of taking it in and oxygenating his body. The leaked air was compressing his lungs and heart. It wasnt until they literally had to pop him like a balloon and relieve the pressure that his oxygen came up, and he started oxygenating his organs again. We knew brain damage was a possibility when he was in to hospital and not coming out of sedation, but once we got him home developmentally he was doing fine, so the Neurologist was the only doctor I did not follow up with. IM SO MAD, FRUSTRATED, AND HURT! I feel like I am entitled to feel this way, Nick and I both! Im tired of the obstacles that Brody has had to over come. He may never play sports now, he may never regenerate what he has lost in the motor cortex. Nick and I always described Brody as an athletic boy before he became ill, after he came home from the hospital we noticed how clumsy he could be, he still is. Now we know why. And while I do feel all of the above, I also feel RELIEVED it wasnt something more, THANKFUL to God for talking to Nick and I and telling us what to do. If Nick and I had waited any longer to transfer him, Brody would have a totally different story! God told us what to do through signs He gave us! IT WAS AMAZING, the way God protected Brody and communicated with Nick and I! We almost lost Brody a few times, so if we have to deal with a stiff ankle, then so be it! Im totally fine with that because he is here for me to tickle, kiss, hug, and cuddle!!! He will experience all of the things we were so afraid he wouldnt, like his first day of school, first crush, broken heart even, getting married, a home, kids, everything God wants him to experience. He has his age on his side, and the brain regenerates, so we will continue wearing his night splints just on the left side, stretching that muscle out, and doing physical therapy. We will now go and see the Neurologist that followed him while he was at U of M. Not sure when that appointment will be, but Nick and I want to know if that was the only damage done and if he will have long term affects as he grows. God has brought Brody through every obstacle that has come his way, I have no reason to think this would be any different. Thank you all for your continued thought and prayers. We love you, Tabitha and Nick
