Broiler shortage during Dashain festival in Nepal [15 August 2013] The recent culling of a large number of bird flu-infected broiler parent chickens is likely to trigger a shortage of chicken meat during Dashain festival, propelling traders to raise prices of other types of meat during the festive season. So far, over 73,000 broiler PS have been culled on account of the bird flu virus. This is around 25% of the total number of broiler PS available in Nepal. “This loss will slow down broiler production in the coming days, which will make it difficult for us to meet the demand for broiler during Dashain festival even if the flu threat subsides by then,” said President of Nepal Hatchery Industries Association, Shiva Prasad Sharma.
