Broncos Complete Sweep Of The Ozona Lions By Ray Glasscock Will Dutton opened the game with a 30 yard return of the opening kickoff. The opening scoring drive for the Broncos went like this: run by Sid Anderson, run by Elijah Cross, Anderson run, Michael Rollert passing complete to his brother Gabe for sixteen yards, Anderson on the pitch option, and Anderson sweep for a 23 yard touchdown run. A Lion caught Anderson near the three-yard line, spun he around, and Anderson fell backwards over the goal line for the score. Ricky Martinez kicked the point after and the Broncos led 7 to 0 with 9:36 left in the first quarter. The Lion’s first offensive series lasted three plays. On second down, Dub Latham hurried the Lion quarterback, causing an incompletion. The Lions recovered a Bronco fumble on the second play of the Broncos’ second drive. The Lions managed two first downs as they went for it on fourth and short twice. After a big loss on first down, the Broncos were flagged for a defensive pass interference that gave the Lions another first down at the Broncos’ 23-yard line. The Lions tried for another fourth down conversion. They completed a pass to their fullback, but Dutton and J. Gutierrez stopped him short of the first down, and the Broncos took over. The Broncos used their five to ten yards and a cloud of dust running game to score their second and last touchdown of the first half. Bryan Garcia got the touchdown on a five-yard run. After Martinez’ PAT, the score was 14 to 0 with 6:27 left in the first half. The Lions moved the chains once on their opening drive of the second half before they had to punt. The Broncos scored quickly to take a three score lead. Andres Acevedo caught a screen pass from Michael Rollert and gained 23 yards. Cross took an inside handoff and broke through the Lions for a 53 yard touchdown run. Martinez kicked true and the score was 21 to 0 with 6:48 left in the third. The next Ozona drive ended in a score for the Broncos. A great pass rush by Acevedo, Anderson, and Ethan Patlan caused the Ozona quarterback to fumble. Patlan recovered for the touchdown. After a penalty on the Broncos, Martinez had to attempt a 25-yard PAT kick. He missed for the first time in his career, leaving the score at 27 to 0 with 5:44 left in the third quarter. The Broncos got the ball back when Acevedo ripped the ball out of a Lion’s hand and Dutton recovered. The reserve running backs shouldered the load on this drive. Eric Garcia broke loose on the option pitch and had a long gain to the Lion 23 yard line. On fourth down from the Lion 21 yard line, Rollert threw to Acevedo who raced into the end zone for the touchdown. Martinez kicked true and the Broncos led 34 to 0 with 1:49 left in the third. The Lions were able to score in the fourth. Their PAT failed and the Broncos won by a score of 34 to 6. This game completed a sweep of all football games against the Lions this year. The seventh grade Colts beat the Cubs 22 to 0. The eighth grade Colts won by a score of 44 to 6. The freshmen team went to Brackettville and won 20 to 12. The JV sophomores won by a score of 48 to 21. This week the Broncos are open. On October 11th, the varsity travels to Alpine to face the 3 and 2 Bucks. This is the first of five district games.
