Broncos Win Homecoming Game The Sonora Broncos had no trouble dispatching the District 12-1A Harper Longhorns at this year’s Homecoming game. The field was soft from the rain and the sidelines were muddy, but the Broncos held onto the ball and put the game away for good in the third quarter for a final 35-7 score. WR/DB Gabe Rollert got the early interception when he picked off the Harper quarterback’s first pass attempt on their initial drive. This set up a touchdown with runs by Elijah Cross and Sid Anderson in addition to receptions by Ricky Martinez and Jonathan Martinez. Rollert kept the ball for an eleven-yard touchdown. Ricky Martinez kicked the point after to give the Broncos a 7 to 0 lead. The Bronco defense stopped the Longhorns giving the offense the ball. The Broncos went to work moving the ball down the field with a pass to Gabe Rollert and rushes by Cross and Anderson. The drive stalled when the offense couldn’t overcome a penalty. Martinez’s field goal attempt missed wide right. Harper finally got a first down but then had to punt. The Longhorns got the ball back when Martinez slipped in the end zone, and a Longhorn defender picked the ball off at the five-yard line and ran it back to the 50. The Harper running back fumbled the ball. Defensive Tackle Ethan Patlan picked up the ball and rumbled to the ten yard line. The ball came back to the 25 after an Unsportsmanlike penalty (the Broncos had 60 yards of penalties in the first half). Anderson got the second Bronco touchdown for the first half on a five-yard run. The score at the half was 14 to 0 in favor of the Broncos. The Broncos scored three more touchdowns in the third quarter. Michael Rollert, Cross, and Scott Martinez moved the ball down the field as the offensive line opened big holes for the runners. Rollert got the third touchdown on a nineteen-yard run. The fourth touchdown came after Cross striped the ball from the Harper running back. Cross got the touchdown as he scored untouched from the four-yard line. Harper fumbled again on their next possession. Coach Phillips gave the majority of his starter the rest of the night off. Andres Acevedo passed complete to Bryan Garcia. Garcia then took the option pitch from Acevedo and raced around the left side into the end zone. The Broncos completed the scoring for the night two-thirds of the way through the third quarter. The final score was 35-7. The Broncos rushed for 304 yards on 50 carries for a 6.08 average yards per carry. Cross led all rushers with 87 yards on 13 carries, followed by Michael Rollert with 82 yards on 13 runs, and Anderson gained 57 yards on 11 touches. Michael Rollert completed six on 14 attempts for 54 yards. Ricky Martinez caught three passes and 29 yards. Gabe Rollert had two receptions for 22 yards. Jonathan Martinez and Anderson caught one pass each. Twenty-three Broncos had tackles in this game. Jonathan Gutierrez led all tacklers with nine. Cody Barber and Anderson were second with eight tackles each. Ricky Martinez continued his perfect streak of point after touchdown kicks. This Friday night, the Broncos play host to the 2-2 Ozona Lions. This is the last non-district game prior to the trek to Alpine on October 11th. Congratulations also go out to the 7th and 8th grade Colts. Both teams won their games versus the Longhorns.
