Broncos announce Gase is interviewing for head-coaching job Technically under contract but free to take a lateral position elsewhere, Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase may still be getting a promotion in Denver. The Broncos have announced that Gase currently is being interviewed for the head-coaching job. Gase, 36, joined the Broncos in 2009 as a member of Josh McDaniels’ staff. Gase remained with the team after John Fox was hired, and Gase became offensive coordinator two years ago, when Mike McCoy left for a promotion with the Chargers. A finalist to be the head coach in San Francisco, some (like me) wondered whether the Broncos hoped the 49ers would hire Gase so that the Broncos wouldn’t have to pass on him. There’s a lingering sense that Gase may not yet be ready to command a team. The wild-card in this equation could be Peyton Manning. If he wants Gase to get the job, the Broncos may risk Manning leaving if Gase isn’t promoted. And while the Broncos claim to want Manning back, it would be foolish to not at least account for the possibility that the Broncos would prefer to not pay Manning another $19 million for a fourth year of football, but that they want him to be the one who ends it.
