Bronx Zoo - Conservation Education Fellowship Job Type Part-Time Department BZ-EDUCATION Pay Rate: $ 12.00 per hour Duration: Up to 13 Weeks Date Range: June 1 – August 28th, 2015 (varies per site, including a few positions going to September 7th, 2014) Schedule: Monday-Friday, up to 30 hours per week APPLICANTS MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR THE ENTIRE SUMMER TO BE CONSIDERED The WCS Education Departments Conservation Education Fellowship program is a unique opportunity for current and recent college graduates and graduate students to explore conservation education at an informal science institution. Fellows acquire the skills needed to provide a classroom that invites and fosters student-directed learning, and learn pertinent information about wildlife conservation issues with a global impact. Selected applicants will spend the summer working at one of the five WCS facilities. The Conservation Education Fellows will primarily focus on teaching Zoo Camp. Fellows will assist full-time staff in instruction, oversight of campers, re-working activities to fit unique learning styles of students, and helping to maintain a lively learning environment throughout the summer. Fellows will work with a variety of age groups ranging from 2 to 17. Responsibilities include but, are not limited to: ● Teach summer camp programs ● Supervise and interact with children ranging in age from 2-17 years old ● Maintain a fun and lively learning environment ● Participate in training prior to camp start ● Prepare and organize materials for camp programs ● Attend regular camp staff meetings ● Assist instructional staff with re-working camp activities to fit unique learning styles of students, as necessary ● Participate in a weekly reflection activity as well as end of the summer project ● Perform all related tasks and duties, as assigned ● Comply with all policies and procedures as presented by WCS SUMMER TEACHING FELLOWS WILL NOT HAVE DIRECT CONTACT WITH OR HANDLE ANIMALS. Qualification Requirements Skills: ● Ability to work within a highly team oriented environment ● Excellent verbal communication skills to help interpret science concepts in both a classroom setting and at zoo exhibits ● Reliable, flexible and accountable Qualifications: ● College student, recent college graduate or graduate student ● Previous experience working with children; one year prior teaching experience preferred ● Educational background in ecology, environmental science or education preferred ● Available to work up to 13-weeks from June 1-August 28, 2015, Monday –Friday (there are opportunities to stay longer up to September 7th)
