Brother Jim emailed me about a month ago and asked if I wanted to see Geoff Muldaur play a benefit for the CT Audubon Society at their place in Pomfret CT. Are you kidding ? Having discovered the Geoff and Maria Muldaur LPs back in my teens, then his 2nd solo LP ....Is Having A Wonderful Time and then (not finally) Paul Butterfields Better Days.....I have been a constant fan of his take on American roots music (mostly blues and jazz and much of this fairly esoteric) as well as his collaborators over the years. (Amos Garret, Ronnie Barron, Stephen Bruton, etc) I saw him play at Pinecrest Country Club (another forgotten CT 1960s music mecca) with bass, drums and guitar backup and then saw PBs Better Days at The Capital Theater in Port Chester a few years later. Then he took a 17 year hiatus. About 8 years ago he released his 3d solo recording The Secret Handshake which was a truly remarkable comeback. He appears on Prairie Home Companion several times a year these days and continues to release great recordings. So.....last nights show was magical in its simplicity and perfection. 71 year old dude with a Martin 6 string and his voice (still hits the high notes). Wonderful anecdotes between songs. The sound system (carefully chosen low-end, borderline MI stuff by a friend of the organization) was pretty darn good and the levels never exceeded 80dBA ......because they didnt need to. 40 people in the audience. All my age, +/- 10 years. If you get a chance to see him perform, do it. Heres a great sample: youtube/watch?v=EDv7YLiKJ_M
