Brother and Sisters- Ive read a significant and unusual amount of pontificating on Facebook recently. I assumed that it had to do something with current events: The Michael Brown incident, the war in Ukraine, Syria/Iraq, and around Israel. Along with the usual nonsense that occurs during campaign season, it seems like were in for an interesting autumn. Like everyone else, I am guilty of such actions. I talk at length about my personal thoughts on various subjects. Of course, my set of morals is based on a first world nation with a stable government and generally stable finances. But does all this proclaiming of moral values behind the anonymity of a keyboard serve any real purpose other than making sure the world knows what is right and wrong in your personal eyes? Furthermore, as a nation of free speech, can this be taken too far? While events like the Brown shooting might incite accusations of racism or point to a larger problem, who are we to comment on what happens in places other than our own? When we act as moral agents and profess our beliefs to others does it serve any real purpose? Im certainly not saying that all the horrible things around the world should not be noticed or pointed out. We all have various levels of things we hold true to ourselves and have a tendency to see our morals as right while someone with the opposing viewpoint as wrong. But WHY do you think the way you think? Something that drives me crazy is when people use the phrase Its common sense, as if their was some be-all tell-all book out there with a list of things we can all agree on. Common sense is only common to the person professing it. There is no moral, ethical, or otherwise thought/action that is common to all of humanity. We like to explain away our wrongdoings as humans in the form of the term human nature. There is no common string that connects all humans other than the identification of ourselves as human beings. Do not assume that I writing off your beliefs as dumb or idiotic. I am only encouraging everyone (including myself) to evaluate what you believe and WHY, rather than just saying Thats the way it is or This is what I grew up with. Construct a sound argument when discussing your beliefs on a particular subject. Thank you for reading, J. Fitzer
