Brothers and Sisters of OSIA! Your help is urgently needed! The Greece School District (a suburb of Rochester) is steadily eroding Level 1 Italian (introductory level) and funneling students to the Spanish and American Sign language programs (ASL) due to budget constraints. Italian in the district has the second-highest enrollment after Spanish! The district is 30% Italian, and the teachers and the residents I have made contact with do not want to lose the program. Thanks to Jennifer Rube, President of the Vincent Lombardi Lodge, the teachers of Italian, and interested taxpayers they are mobilizing an effort to protest such action at the November 12th school board meeting. THEY NEED OUR HELP NOW!! I have already made contact with Jenn, the District 8 CSJ Chairman, the teacher mobilizer, the residents mobilizer, and a supportive school board member, advising them on strategy and tactics for the Board meeting. If we lose level 1, and the Level 2, 3, and 4 students graduate, we can kiss Italian in the Greece School District good-bye! Furthermore, it would also hurt our Italian A.P. program because there would be no feeder program from down below. Keep in mind so many of us fought to maintain the AP program a few years ago when it was at the brink of extinction! So, I want as many of you to repond to the superintendent of the district, Barbara Deane-Williams, at [email protected], and urge her to do her best to maintain and grow the program in a district with a strong Italian component. I will too. Our Italian brethren upstate need us now. A massive effort will turn the mindset of the school officials around! Hop to it! Thank you!
