Brought in a beautiful black boy today - straight from the compound he went to the vet for neuter, teeth, titers, etc..........Paperwork came through the vet from the owner / handler and stated calm, quiet boy. You need to understand that the vet who does this for us does almost all the dogs that come through Palm Beach Kennel Club with preparation for adoption and for care for the owners when they are injured. He knows greyhounds and has done this for years. I have been doing this for about 14 years and picked up many greys after surgery. Most are a little reticent with the new things they are seeing and still a little tired / groggy from the anesthesia. This boy came charging into the room at the vets office - helicopter tail - sniffing everyone and everything - in your face - a healthy, happy wild and crazy guy. Neither Doc Miller nor I have seen one as crazy as this one....and they said he was calm at the compound. Well see how he does as he recuperates from his neuter. He could be petted out as we intended - or could be a candidate for the service dog program. He will have to learn to focus and he certainly was not doing that when we picked him up (too soon - too much new - we understand that) and he has to be able to get along with small dogs (he was ready to investigate one that was in the waiting room - not sure how he would have been if we had let him get closer). SO - you never can tell if a dog is calm and sedate --- or wild and crazy. We will see what happens in a few days as he drives the foster family out of their minds (I sure hope not.)
