Brrr! 2C (37F) I’ve been thankful these past few nights for my Kathy Ireland comforter. The seasonal shift during the month of October as we approach Halloween puts a chill in the air and, for many, frost on the pumpkin. We are on to crisper weather and shorter days. Fall necessitates comfort, warm sticky stews, roasted root vegetables, bowls of mashed potatoes, spice breads, and poached fruit. Pics: A warm, earthy smelling home , Leo made old-fashioned egg custard pie with nutmeg (pic) .Once you taste this pie youll know why this is a blue ribbon winner! And this morning,I made chicken & sardine curry puffs aka Empanadas. I love the idea of freezing them to bake off or deep fry at a moments notice.Watch these spicy chicken and sardine mince pastries fly off the platter. They are the perfect finger food at any special occasion.Last pic: We lost our 12 yr old mutt Little Shit a year ago today... (Oct 23rd 2013) By early November, most lawn care chores and activities are completed; lawn mowers are put away, watering has ended, hoses are drained and stored for the winter .This weekend,Leo will spend all day putting the garden to sleep for the winter, mostly a matter of cleaning up and covering up ,cutting back his tall Cannas. It’s time for gardeners everywhere to go dark for the winter. It’s funny how the moment comes when even the most dedicated (OK, obsessive like Leo) gardener reaches the point where enough is enough. The only thing left to do is to get comfortable and into hibernation mode.... Now chilly autumn mornings and evenings are here.. . . its time to drag out the winter coats. Well ,Bah Humbug to you Mother Nature--So while the vibrancy of spring may be a distant memory or a only longed-for hope this time of year, beauty still can be found in the cold and wet days of winter. Pictures may not leap out at you as on a bright, sunny day, but with a little patience — and keeping an open eye — you can find something worthwhile....
