Bruce Lee didnt actually write this (Fritz Perls, a German pyschoanalyst actually did) but it still rings with truth. We spend our whole lives living it meeting the expectations of others. First when we are children, we live trying to meet our parents expectations. They mean well, but they should not necessarily steer us to what they expect us to be, but to steer us in the direction of our potential. They should see our talents and limitations and guide us with those in mind. Often children will meet the expectations we put on them, but if the expectations are wrong, misguided or too much, then they do more damage than what we were trying to create. Next we try to meet the expectations of our teachers and the powers that be. And finally we try to meet the expectations of our boss, our spouse....society. What if one expectation is not in line with another? We feel like a failure and someone usually get let down. We need to look more at peoples POTENTIAL! Life is not about living up to other’s expectations (except Gods if you are a Christian). It is about determining what are realistic expectations for us. By realizing what our expectations are, we can analyze them, to see if they are realistic. We can adopt them if they are realistic. Or we can dialogue and discover where we need to compromise, and revise the expectations. We can agree to them, and we can seek to accomplish them. But we are not to “live up” to anyone’s expectations. They are not above us, and we do not need to jump for approval.
