Bruce Springsteens long musical career, which next year will reach 50 years, has been a succession of triumphant highs coupled with emotional lows ...... fortunately, the former have far outweighed the latter. And 38 years ago today both emotions converged on the same day when he became the first rock star to appear on the covers of both Time and Newsweek magazines in the same week. The articles were written, partially in response to the breakthrough success of The E Street Bands third album Born To Run which had been released two months previously and was sitting at number 3 on the Billboard album charts. But for all of the hype that this sudden attention brought him, Bruce worried that the burden of carrying such lofty creative expectations would backlash against him. When his first album had been released to critical praise, Bruce had been compared as the new Bob Dylan, something that didnt sit comfortably on his young shoulders ....... and he didnt want it to happen again. He would soon become embroiled in a legal battle with his then-manager Mike Appel which would keep Bruce and the band from going into the studio to record new material over a year. But during that time he continued to write songs for other artists, and most importantly, the band went on the road performing further away from the comfortable confines of the East Coast and would create his legion of fans through the blood, sweat and tears of marathon shows and his devotion to being in communion with his audiences. And from these lofty positions, many great things continue to come ............
