Bruin Resource Center Internship The Bruin Resource Center (BRC) - TopicsExpress

Bruin Resource Center Internship The Bruin Resource Center (BRC) is a Student Affairs Office at UCLA whose overarching mission is to assist students in effectively navigating the university by providing information, referrals, and support. In the service of this mission, the BRC provides specialized services and programs to the following student populations: transfer students, student veterans, current and former foster youth (Guardian Scholars), students with dependents, and undocumented students. Services are designed to ease the transition to UCLA, provide access to a variety of useful resources both on and off campus, and support students in developing a personal “niche” within the diverse social and academic communities of the campus. Through individual referrals, group workshops, websites, and communications, and institutional advocacy, the programs work to support students’ academic achievement and personal development. Benefit to the Student: 1. Application of Higher Education theories including student retention and persistence, student involvement, student validation and leadership development. 2. Experience working with and providing additional supports to students from underrepresented populations at UCLA, including low income, minority and first generation students. 3. Gain experience collaborating with faculty and staff from a variety of campus organizations, including Academic Affairs (e.g., Academic Counseling Units), Student Affairs (e.g., Financial Aid Office, Office of Residential Life), Housing and Hospitality Services, and External Affairs (e.g., Parent and Family Programs). 4. The BRC is a friendly, supportive, relaxed place to work; we know academics are students’ first priority and are willing to be flexible around classes. Intern Duties (Required): 1. Assist with the development, planning and coordination of program events. Such events include welcome receptions, awareness-building events, student retreats, and end of the year receptions. Over the summer of 2013, the programs we will focus on are cross-population collaboration and the creation of a grant proposal portfolio, which will require planning and execution assistance, including some administrative tasks. 2. Assist in assessing students’ needs and facilitating student connections to relevant academic and support services on campus and in the community. 3. Assist the BRC staff with developing and monitoring long-range strategic goals, plans, objectives, program standards and performance measures. 4. Assume responsibility for special projects as designated by the internship supervisor and the interim director. Intern Duties (Non-essential): Should the intern have skills and experience in developing print and web-based media and communications material the intern will: 1. Create and disseminate various forms of communication including email updates and newsletters. These communications will contain information about current events happening within the BRC, up-to-date information regarding resources, and points of interest amongst BRC students. 2. Generate and update print materials that advertise the multiple programs in the BRC. Print materials might include flyers, brochures and other promotional materials designed to bring awareness of the BRC on campus, highlight the activities of the BRC, and garner support for the BRC from on and off-campus stakeholders. Compensation and Benefits 1. The internship period is from August through June, excluding University holidays and inter-quarter breaks. The intern must be available for occasional evening and weekend work. 2. $12 per hour for 15-20 hours a week for 12 weeks. To Apply Contact Vanessa Luke at [email protected].
