Brunswick Police Department PRESS RELEASE Today, Thursday, May 29, 2014 at approximately 8:40 a.m., Brunswick Police Department officers responded to 2414 Johnston Street in reference to a 9-1-1 call with an open line. Dispatchers advised officers that they could hear a male and a female yelling in the background. Upon arrival, the initial responding officer saw a black male run from the residence. The male was located a short distance away by other officers and was taken into custody. The initial responding officer entered the residence on Johnston Street where the 9-1-1 call orginated and located Angela L. Whitten on the couch, unconscious and suffering from multiple stab wounds to the chest and upper torso area. E.M.T.s were called to the scene and Ms. Whitten was transported to the South East Georgia Health System, Brunswick Campus Emergency Room, where she was pronounced dead a short time later. Ms. Whitten, a 53 year old black female, resided at the Johnston Street address. Wright Greyhound Phoenix, a 51 year old black male from Brunswick, was arrested and charged with murder in the first degree, interference with a 9-1-1 call, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime. Officers also recovered a weapon possibly involved in the homicide.
