Brushing up on my Lovecraft in anticipation of recording for the Tales from the Black Vault podcast tomorrow. So Im relistening to The H.P. Lovecraft Literary Podcast episodes about the Shadow over Innsmouth, one of my favorite stories of his. Heres a transcription of part of the podcast, with persons 1, 2, and 3. They were talking about how Lovecraft had tried to write this story in FOUR different styles, before giving up and reverting to his own natural Lovecraft style: --- : It has all the defects I deplore—especially in point of style, where hackneyed phrases & rhythms have crept in despite all precautions.... No—I dont intend to offer The Shadow Over Innsmouth for publication, for it would stand no chance of acceptance. 1: So, he didnt think it was very good. 2: It almost sounds like he was disappointed that he had to go back to the Lovecraft style. 1: Yeah, and hes uh... at this point in his life he was feeling really down, just because he wrote At the Mountains of Madness and was really excited about it, and just wasnt getting any traction. He was really long in the mouth. 3: Its really sad, because he was reaching the greatest Lovecraft period, right? All his greatest works were right in this period, most of them? 1: I think, yeah, some of his coolest stuff is written- 2: Yeah, this is the best part, right here. And you know, I wonder... Were about- Did you say he wrote this in 31? 1: Yep. Uh-huh 2: So hes about six years away from dying. --- This gets me, and its a good reminder that life is too short to be unkind to yourself and your creations.
