Brussels, 24 January 2014 140124/01 S T A T E M E N T by EU High Representative Catherine Ashton on the recent violent attacks in Egypt The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today: I condemn the bomb attacks in Egypt over the past 24 hours, which have killed and injured a large number of people. I extend my sympathy to the families of the victims. Tomorrow, 25 January, Egypt will mark the third anniversary of the popular revolution where the Egyptian people stood up against a repressive regime, to call for dignity, social justice, pluralism, security, democracy, human rights, and a better economy. In trying to achieve these goals, Egyptians have faced many set-backs. The road towards democracy will no doubt remain difficult, but violence will not bring Egypt any closer to the peoples desire for a democratic country where all Egyptians enjoy respect and fundamental human rights. All the people of Egypt must now stand together and, in a spirit of compromise, build a deep and sustainable democracy.
