“Brussels and Buzz Aldrin” By: Anna Mosby Since my last post, we’ve been pretty busy at the Science Committee. In February, we had a hearing on the “Secret Science Reform Act.” More recently we had a hearing on the possible Mars flyby mission and the need for NASA to develop a “roadmap” for future space endeavors, and a hearing on how technology is protecting American citizens from cybercrime. In addition to the three hearings, we had a markup on the National Windstorm Impact Reduction Act, which passed the Committee. In addition to all of the work with hearings and the markup, the office has been working on preparing materials for a trip that that Ranking Member Johnson is taking to Brussels. She’s going to be attending the Innovation Convention and is sitting on a panel on global challenges and collaboration. I had the opportunity to do some research on topics that I hadn’t really looked into before such as the BRAIN Initiative and Open Access, and I really appreciated the chance to learn a little bit more about the different topics. I also compiled information on the other panelists, and it seems like every panelist has an amazing background. Other panelists include the South African Minister of Science and Technology, the President of the UN Education Science Cultural Health Advancement Foundation, the Argentinean Minister of Science, Technology, and Productive Innovation, and the President of the European Research Council. Oh and Buzz Aldrin called the office! How cool is that? He was calling to hear about the hearing we had earlier in the week on the Mars flyby mission. Unfortunately I didn’t get to talk to him, but I immediately e-mailed my family and friends to let them know that Buzz Aldrin had called our office!
