Buddhas Light Mountain.By Laura Fieselman Master Hsing Yun emphasizes not needing to go some place else to find enlightenment, but that we can realize our true nature in the here and now, within this precious human birth and this world (FGS website). He promotes that one can actualize altruism, joyfulness, and universality, by practicing the fundamental concepts of Humanistic Buddhism. As opposed to many other religions, this branch of Buddhism focuses more on issues in this world rather than how to leave this world behind and where to go after; on caring for the living rather than the dead; on benefiting others rather than benefiting oneself; and on universal salvation rather than cultivation for oneself. This doctrine is vocalized by the Four Stanzas of the BLIA: Kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity permeate the world. Benefit heaven and earth, treasure opportunities to make friends. Practice Chan and chanting, cultivate morals and tolerance. Maintain humility and gratitude, making the greatest vows. FGS maintains that when one gives faith, hope, joy, and service, he helps all beings as well as himself. Venerable Master Hsing Yuns devotion to transforming this world through the practice of Humanistic Buddhism insists that to transform ones world one must be actively engaged in it. The Master says community transcends the individual, and in doing so, fulfills the individual in the most complete way possible. Wherever he goes, Venerable Hsing Yun encourages people to unite both the local and global community into a world of complete equality, joyfulness, and perfect peace.
