Buddys Tavern, winner of the Richard Rodgers Award and based on the Sundance Award-winning movie, Two Family House, this new romantic musical is the story of an Italian-American factory worker on Staten Island in 1956. Buddy has always wanted his own business- a bar where he can sing his heart out to his customers. Family pressures, race relations, unexpected love, and the struggle to achieve ones dreams, all come alive in this New York premiere musical. SEEKING: [BUDDY VISALO] Male, Italian-American working class, mid-thirties. An affable, lovable, very simple straightforward guy. A dreamer who’s smart enough to know his dreams don’t always fit or work out. Blue collar with aspirations for more and believes he can achieve it. Baritone, not operatic. [MARY O’NEARY] Female, Irish, twenties. The tenant Buddy must evict in order to claim his new house and bar. Very shy, but very tough. Has already been through a tough life and knows how to survive. Waiting for the right person or moment to put her defense down and be kind, loving, in love. A devoted, beautiful, practical mother who is still a child herself. Soprano, [THE BARKEEP] Male, African American, thirties to early fifties. Our narrator and Buddy’s son (unbeknownst to the audience). Charming, forthcoming, very direct, a bit of a dreamer himself. Baritone. [ANGELO/SALESCLERK, etc] Male, Italian American Barkeep, forties. Angelo is Buddy’s best friend, sweet, but very resourceful/practical. The working man with a steady job in the group. Fiercely loyal to Buddy. Character baritone. The following roles have been CAST. Actors may be considered for possible replacements if needed: [ESTELLE VISALO] Role CAST. Female, Italian-American housewife, early thirties. Buddy’s wife; a hometown girl, down-to-earth, very comfortable with where life is headed, practical, resilient, sense of humor but knows what’s what in her life and doesn’t want it changed. Mezzo/belt. [GLORIA] Role CAST. Female, Italian American, thirties to forties. Estelle’s best friend, a know it all because she’s seen it all. Knows what’s right for Estelle. A Staten Islander since birth. Funny and loyal. Character mezzo/alto. [JIM O’NEARY/SALESCLERK/MONAHAN/BRANCACCIO/MR. DIMINJUK] Role CAST. Male, fifties. Character man, able to play different tones, personalities, and cultures. Versatile singer; baritone. EPA Rules are in effect. A monitor will be provided.
