Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a 1992 motion picture directed by Fran Rubel Kuzui that starred Kristy Swanson, Donald Sutherland, Paul Reubens, and Rutger Hauer. But it is more famously a 1997–2003 television series produced by Joss Whedon and starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, Anthony Head, David Boreanaz, and James Marsters. Michelle Trachtenberg joined the cast in its last three seasons. Buffy is your typical high school airhead beauty queen who discovers that she is destined to be the Slayer -- a super-strong, super-fast killer of vampires. The film was played for comedy, and was a box office failure. But the TV series was played for drama, and was a smash hit. The series spent its first four seasons at Sunnydale High School, as Buffy dealt with vampires and demons as well as homework and dating. Buffys home base was the school library -- the one room where moden kids, addicted to smartphones and iPads, never go.
