Bugger !!!! For once, we didnt get any images at all (but will get em later !!!)..........went to a regular antiques fair with Vidya today prior to meeting the parents for coffee.............it was such a beautiful sunny, warm day in southern England today...........:o) As we were leaving, we spotted a rather old card-constructed suitcase...........it was clearly marked on the top Cunard - White Star Line and below another clear label stating the name of the owner (a lady) together with the ship RMS Queen Mary and the date of travel 1st July 1936 from Southampton..................... Limited research this evening has revealed that 1st July 1936 was when the (1st) Cunard Queen Mary liner left Southampton for her first trans-Atlantic crossing to New York........seemingly, the passenger list read like Whos Who............. Shortly after buying this item in great condition for a very reasonable price, guess what........we gave it away !!!!! Last-minute Mothers Day gift to my fabulous Mum, and we gave this to her later today...........her father (my Grandfather, sadly now deceased) was the Insurance manager for Cunard after WW2 through to the 70s..........first based in Liverpool and latterly in Trafalgar House in Southampton.........he sailed many times on this fine ship (now fortunately preserved in California) and Mum has already said that apart from researching the cases original owner/passenger on that maiden voyage back in July 36, she is going to use it to store Grandads Cunard memorabilia in it............this will include a heavy brass wartime telescope that he was given in the 1970s that was used on the bridge of the Queen Mary 1 during her time as a troopship during her WW2 trans-Atlantic crossings.................. Its odd that certain old things find you sometimes and get put back in almost the right place..............:o)
