Buhari Vanguard Salutes the NBA and the NLC for being sleepless watchdogs to Nigerian Democracy November 3rd, 2014 It is pertinent that every household, community and nation be watched over against invasion by intruders whose intention is to cause mayhem and destroy democratic institutions. We are pleased that the Nigerian Bar Association NBA and the Nigerian Labor Congress NLC have kept this responsibility of watching over and defending our nascent democracy from those who seek to destroy it. We noted with delight the reactions and responses of the Nigerian Bar Association and the Nigerian Labor Congress to the withdrawal of the security details to the Honorable Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Right Honorable, Aminu Tambuwal, by the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba. In two separate press releases by the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Augustine Alegbe on the 31st of October 2014 and another by the President of the Nigerian Labor Congress, Comrade Abdulwahid Omar, the duo berated the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba for assuming the responsibility of the judiciary, interpreting the law, pronouncing judgment and taking away the security details attached to the Honorable Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal. The duo also advised the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, to immediately rescind his decision and restore the security details of the Honorable Speaker of the House of Representatives, Right Honorable Aminu Tambuwal. We consider the reactions and actions from the NBA and the NLC as ones from stakeholders and watchdogs in our nascent democracy that need to be encouraged and emulated by others. It takes men and women of rare courage to take such a stand in a nation where impunity and executive rascality is becoming the order of the day. We urge the authorities of the Nigeria Police to remedy what is left of them by immediately rescinding this ill taken decision and immediately return the security details of the Honorable Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, with immediate effect. We remind the leadership of the Nigerian Police that government comes and goes and that power changes from one political party to the other and as such they should be mindful of being used by the ruling political party and the presidency. We also commend Nigerians who have unanimously condemned this action by the Police which have been considered by all as an abysmal abuse of democratic and legislative process in Nigeria. We have confidence in the Nigerian judiciary and we look forward to a decisive statement in the form of a judgment and pronouncement from them in due course.
