Build a matriculation centre in Kuching — Fadillah KUCHING: PBB Youth remains hopeful the government will set up a matriculation centre here for the convenience of students. Its chief Datuk Fadillah Yusof said the proposed centre was one of the resolutions adopted during the last triennial delegates conference (TDC), but had not materialised due to financial constraints. Currently, there is a temporary matriculation centre in Sejinkat, but many find studying there inconvenient due to its location. “We now have one, but it is not a complete centre. Also, we want the matriculation centre to be in Kuching city centre instead of expecting students to fly to Labuan, which is not convenient, let alone the high costs,” he told a news conference after casting his vote for the Youth wing’s election at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching here yesterday. Fadillah, who is also Works Minister, conceded that the government had a lot more to do to close the infrastructure development gap between the remote and urban areas. He said the remote areas in the state required more attention, adding people should distinguish the difference between remote and rural areas. “Remote area is not rural area. For rural areas, most of them have been well connected and provided. But there will be more challenges to face when it comes to developing remote areas.” He admitted financial constraints and project feasibility were major factors why remote areas remained under-developed. Citing as an example, he said the remote community could not enjoy power supply through he transmission lines due to the high cost of installation. “Solar energy is not viable either because the maintenance cost is too high. For remote areas, we still need to do more.” On another matter, Fadillah said PBB Youth had successfully organised Career Fair and were pushing for more technical schools to be built to boost skills development in the state. He added that the Youth wing, together with the main body, had redeveloped traditional villages in the state as well as launched native customary right (NCR) programmes. To a question, he said PBB Youth would continue placing emphasis on preserving social and racial harmony, in addition to boosting socio-economic progress in the state. He felt the community would have to adapt to changes given the rapid urban development and advancement in information communication and technology (ICT). “It is imperative for us to enhance closer rapport despite rapid development in many aspects,” he said, cautioning some people might be fed misleading information due to politics in cyberspace. 19/10/13
