Build it and they will come (Mike Joyce 2004). People ask all the time about doing gatherings in various locations. Setting them up isnt as hard as you think, and getting people to show can be tricky but there is a way to go about it to ensure those who say they are showing actually do show up. First you need a location. Somewhere free, somewhere where you can fit 15-20 people comfortably to see presentations and how tos. Ideally somoene has a big ass shop and a wife that is OK with letting strangers come into their house and use the bathroom and walk around their property. The second thing you need, is a big name builder to draw people in. A builder many people are familiar with, and who does good work. There have been NERBs gatherings and NERB-ish gatherings all over the place, NY, NJ, Mass, (almost MD), NC, FL, Alaska, Chicago, Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Australia. Build it, and they will come! How to get people to show up? It has been pretty easy to get people to show up, just post on local fishing forums and rodbuilding boards. YOull be surprised at teh response. How to get them to actually commit and show up? When I started doing them, I had everyone bring something. Food, drinks, plates - something. I was in constant contact, so if someone was BSing about showing up, I made it really uncomfy since we were relying on them and theyd have to lie to me a lot of times. lol. Someone has to step up and say Im doing it. Ive spoken with most of the guys who have hosted these gatherings, and they were all so happy that they decided to do it.
