Building on a Firm Foundation! This song has great significance to me. It, along with the verse of another song at the end of this testimony, describe my life! A number of years ago everything seemed to be going my ) way. My kids made me proud as they were doing well in school and taking responsibility in leadership positions. I had a beautiful wife who made me proud. Business was good. I added several employees to meet the demand. I held several leadership positions in the community as well as pastor of our church. I would rush in at night with not enough time to rush back out to another meeting. I was riding on a wave of significance in my own mind. Kath tried to tell me to slow down, but I was in demand! I couldnt let people down! This was my calling! Or so I thought. Finally, as in all things, what (who) goes up must come down. And down I came. The things and people that were motivating me gradually began slipping from my ability to manage and influence. I almost went bankrupt. My leadership suffered because of too many irons in the fire. The fire began to go out and no matter how hard I tried things and people were slipping from my influence and grasp. I sought counseling. It really didnt help. What did help was a good friend who had the boldness to tell me, even though it hit me like a load of bricks, You are NOT God! That stopped me in my tracks. They were just the words I needed to hear! I learned that anything I build is temporary at best. Everything He leads me to build upon His Firm Foundation will last.... as long as He wants it to! Relationships, Business, talents, family and abilities are all under his direction and ultimate control. He gives them to us as stewards not owners. Once we give our lives to Jesus we no longer own or belong to anyone or anything that has a greater hold on our lives than Him! When we fall because we have built on our own ideals and ideas it can be the best thing that happens, although painful. He has told us that He is able to keep us from falling but that applies to what is built upon His Firm Foundation! When we are stressed, when money runs low, things break, relationships change, tragedy strikes, etc., etc., etc,... we can easily try to control the situation or think God just isnt there or is unable or unwilling to help. But, that is where faith in Him regardless of changing circumstances comes in. When He is between us and everything else good and bad, He becomes the first one we see in any situation. As the old song says, Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His Wonderful Face. And, the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His Glory and Grace. He Loves us with an undying love that proved itself by His dying and rising from the dead. He did that for YOU! He did that for Me! He did that for everyone and all who call upon Him will be saved!
