Building redevelopment is monopolistic, not cooperative. It is actively causing the collapse of thousands of old cooperative societies in metros, by concentrating power in the hands of a handful of office-bearers, encouraging bullying of senior citizens, and breeding enmity and ill-will among members. People who oppose such projects in order to protect their own properties and the future of their family members, are branded as traitors, and victimized by their own societies. Yes, redevelopment projects do occasionally succeed. But for every success-story, there are 3-4 failed projects. Lakhs of aged people have been rendered helpless and homeless by such misadventures. Despite owning flats worth crores of rupees, they are struggling to make ends meet. Invisible risks of project failure and builders’ financial weakness and mismanagement is loaded on flat-owners.
