Building your vocabulary through The Hindu Word#2 of the day: Pragmatic ‘The real question in the debate over India’s Sri Lanka policy isn’t whether it is pragmatic or ethical.’ [The sentence given above has been taken from The Hindu (dated: Nov 20, 2013)] Pragmatic is an adjective which means to solve problems in a logical and reasonable way without depending on fixed protocols or theories. For example, The king was a pragmatic ruler who always sought the sensible advice of his ministers. It would be easier to remember the meaning of pragmatic if we relate it to being practical. The word has originated from the Latin word ‘pragmaticus’ which is to be skilled in law or business. Apt synonyms of the word could be practical, realistic and matter-of-fact while antonyms of the word could be impractical, unrealistic and utopian. The archaic usage of this word conveys a negative meaning of being meddlesome or being opinionated. The word also refers to the philosophy of pragmatism, an American movement which said that the meaning of conceptions is to be sought in their practical bearings rather than anything metaphysical.
