Built by D. John V, the Royal Convent of Mafra is the most important monument of the Portuguese Baroque. The ensemble develops symmetrically from a central axis, the basilica, the main point of a long facade flanked by two towers, locating in their area after the room convent of the Order of St. Francis Province Arrábida. The direction of the work fell to John Friedrich Ludwig, German goldsmith, with formation of architecture in Italy. The works began in 1717. On 22 October 1730, the day of the 41st anniversary of the king, proceeded to the consecration of the basilica. The Palace-Convent has one of the most important Portuguese libraries, consisting of approximately 40,000 books, and numerous works of art commissioned by the monarch in the country, in France, Flanders (from whence the two chimes of 92 bells) and Italy. During the reign of King Joseph created the School of Sculpture of Mafra, directed by Italian Alessandro Giusti, and where he passed Machado de Castro. joseantoniomarquesfotografo.blogspot/2010/06/convento-de-mafra-basilica-o-palacio.html
