Bulacan continues to step up in nutrition programs CITY OF MALOLOS – The fight against malnutrition and hunger intensified as Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado gives recognition to the outstanding municipalities, barangays and volunteer workers for their significant contributions in the nutrition programs of the province. During the culminating program of the Nutrition Month at the Bulacan Capitol Gymnasium, the governor together with Assistant Secretary of Health Maria-Bernardita Flores, CESO II, Executive Director IV, National Nutrition Council awarded the municipality of Paombong led by Mayor Isagani Castro as the “Natatanging Bayan sa Nutrisyon”, Barangay San Miguel in Calumpit led by Barangay Captain Florante Talavera as “Natatanging Barangay sa Nutrisyon” and Vilma Oronce of Barangay San Miguel, Calumpit as the “Natatanging Lingkod Lingap sa Nayon.” “Layunin nating imulat ang mga mamamayan sa alternibong pamamaraan upang magupi ang lumalalang gutom at malnutrisyon,” the governor said. He also emphasized the big role that breastfeeding mothers have in the nutrition of their children. “Tayo pong mga magulang ay may pananagutan sa lipunan na magtulungan upang matiyak na ang ating mga supling ay mabigyan ng pagkakataong lumaking malusog, intelihente at produktibong mga kasapi ng lipunan. At upang ating masigurong tayo po ay lumalandas sa wastong pangangalaga sa kalusugan ng ating mga anak ay minabuti po nating bigyan ng kaukulang pansin ang pagpapa-breastfeeding,” said Alvarado. Aside from putting up a breastfeeding station inside the Capitol building, a search for outstanding mothers was launched which awarded Camille Aquino of the town of Bulakan as the winner of 2013 Mutya ng Breastfeeding. Flores, as the guest speaker of the culminating program, lauded the winners for their efforts to help reduce the malnutrition rate in their communities. “Alam kong hindi biro ang pagsisikap na dinaanan ninyo upang maisakatuparan ang hangarin na pagtulungang wakasan ang gutom at malnutrisyon,” said Flores. She also cited the notable low percentage of malnutrition in Central Luzon particularly in Bulacan but continuous fight against hunger is still very crucial.
