Bulk harvesting outdated The editor Because of the great success in the aquaculture, the bulk harvesting for export is simply outdated. If we could sell our fish to each other and NZ trawlers and seiners only caught what we can consume for our local trade 90% of the issues would go away. Having a much smaller catch need, this would be uneconomic for the bulk harvesters from overseas, this would create 100’s of smaller boats all people who love to make living on the sea. To go to a seaside town and have for dinner a fresh locally caught fish, caught the same day, by a locally supported NZ fisherman would great. They call these places tourist trap’s. This works well in Tonga where the fish belong to its people. However it is clear that the King of Tonga has a much higher intellect than John Key. Just comparing apples with apples. The cost of loss of fishermen to small sea side towns and beaches will far out way any export gain. On the plus side the recreational fishermen have united in both Islands with one goal. To use there party vote to stop all export sea food that has not been farmed. Input into the fishing policy of one major party has begun. I have been charter fishing for 17 years so have many contacts. We want snapper 1 to be completely commercial free with only aquaculture and recreational fisherman allowed to fish there. The fishermen have told me we have the party votes to do it. Rhys Smith
