Bullwhip Days, The Slaves Remember Avon Books, Copyright 1988 By James Mellon ISBN:0-0380-70884-1 Day #2: Part 4 - GOD, RELIGION & The Bible GOD, Religion and the Bible have always been controversial with respect to Slavery. It is widely known that racists used (and still use) all three to justify Racial Superiority, Prejudice and Discrimination. Satan uses the same as a convenient excuse for (stubborn and rebellious) people to stay away from The Word of God and Religion. The same suits him fine because they ignorantly wind up with him and his demons in Hell! I will now briefly address these matters as they relate to American Slavery. First and foremost, via divine grace, God allows human beings to live on earth through both His PERFECT WILL and His PERMISSIVE WILL. For instance, in His PERFECT WILL, there is no such thing as divorce. Once marriage takes place, its supposed to be for life. However in Gods PERMISSIVE WILL, Jesus teaches that because of mankinds hardness of heart, God allowed the concept of Divorce. Likewise, concerning the concept of slavery, it is NOT mandated in Gods PERFECT WILL but TOLERATED (Like Divorce) under His PERMISSIVE WILL; that is until the guilty Confesses, Repents and seeks forgiveness from both God and Man for such sin. I will soon share a current true story of a former white bigot who received salvation then sought forgiveness from an African American he attacked in the 1960s. Like Divorce, in Bible times God put specific rules in place to regulate the concept of Slavery since man continued to stubbornly ascribe to and openly practice the same. Second, although God permissively allowed slavery in the Bible (by not immediately striking down the slave holders for continuing it), this type of slavery was completely different and even foreign to that which was created in America. In Bible times anyone could sell themselves into slavery until their financial obligations were paid in full, after which they would be set free. Also, slaves in Bible times could marry into and therefore become family with their former slave masters. The same was criminally illegal under American Slavery. There was also less stigma and racial disdain for slaves in bible times. Finally, slaves (servants) were also protected from despotic mistreatment in the Bible. For example, Exodus 21:20 reads and if a man smite his servant (slave), or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished. Also, Exodus 21:26 reads and if a man smite the eye of his servant (slave), or the eye of his maid, that it perish; he shall let him go free for his eyes sake. As you will see in Bullwhip Days, American slaves were terrorized, raped, maimed and killed for sport with absolutely no human consequence whatsoever. Unfortunately, God gets blamed for this chiefly due to our own ignorance (lack of knowledge) for which we, as Gods children, suffer destruction. (Hosea 4:6) Accordingly, although Americans used God, Religion and the Bible to justify legal forced servitude (slavery), they hypocritically refused to adopt the same type of benevolent slavery that God allowed to take place under PERMISSIVE WILL in the Bible!
