Bumiputra can be Pakistani, Bangladeshi or Arab. Bumiputra is inferior to umnoputra. Smart move. Dayak is the original people of the Land and not the bumiputra. Bumiputra can be 1st Generation Malaysian or 2nd Generation Malaysian. Dayak have always been the people of the Land even before Melaka. I salute thee, Sabahan and Sarawakian. Draw a clear line. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dayaks want Bumiputera term dropped Joe Fernandez | January 21, 2015 Bumiputera can’t replace Lain-Lain, a derogatory term which depicts Bangsa Dayak as “nothing but useless” and discriminated against from the very beginning. KUCHING: Nearly 60 years after the term Bumiputera, coined by Tunku Abdul Rahman, came into widespread government usage, the Dayaks of Sabah and Sarawak want it dropped. They prefer to be known as Dayak as they know that they are indigenous and don’t want any other term to be attached to emphasise their status. Getting into specifics in Sarawak, they are Dayak Iban, Dayak Bidayuh, Dayak Orang Ulu and Dayak Melanau. This is the position taken by the Dayak National Congress (DNC) of Sabah and Sarawak, an influential NGO. Dayak, in the greater sense, also includes the Dusunic – incorporating Kadazan — and Murutic Groupings in Sabah. “We prefer to be called Dayak instead of Bumiputera to replace the term Lain-Lain (Others) in government documents,” said DNC President Mengga Mikui. He was commenting on an announcement by Sarawak Chief Minister that the term Lain-Lain will be dropped. The Federal Cabinet, Adenan added, had agreed. Lain-Lain, he added, depicts us as “nothing but useless”. “By depicting us as Lain-Lain, we Bangsa Dayak have been discriminated against from the very beginning.” “Dayaks have always been Bumiputera. So, why must Dayak be called Bumiputera Dayaks, Bumiputera Sabah or Bumiputera Sarawak?” asked Mengga. “If the term Bumiputera is used, how do we distinguish between the Bumiputera in Sabah and Sarawak and the Malays in the peninsula?” “Who would be more Bumiputera than the other or a better or higher degree of Bumiputera?” He said the DNC position on the matter would the right one than just simply have Indian, Chinese and Malay, besides Lain-Lain, in government forms in the peninsular mould. Just as the Indian, Chinese and Malay in Malaysia are made up of various ethnic groups, the Dayaks are made up of many tribes, continued Mengga. Delving into figures, he said there are 40 tribes in Sabah and 30 in Sarawak. “The Dayaks in both Sabah and Sarawak number several millions,” said Mengga. “In Sarawak alone they comprise 1.5 million.. There is a further 1.5 million in Sabah.” In Kalimantan across the border, the Dayaks number 11 million, said Mengga who has reached out to the rest of the nation in Indonesia.
