Buona sera. What you are looking at is a 1932 price list for a house of prostitution in Genoa, Italy that I think was run by someone called Sinodda la Chiascioni. Not sure about that. Anyway, at the time prostitution was controlled by the State, and the girls who worked in the case chuise, or closed houses, had regular health check-ups and other benefits of State sponsored employment. I tried to translate the ad, but there are some things I just don’t understand. So far this is what I’ve worked out. Alla Casa del Piacere is House of prostitution, but I have no idea what alla buona and doppietta mean? The prices are easy. 4.50 lira for mezz’ora (half hour) and 6.30 lira for an ora (an hour) with an exchange rate at the time of 25.00 lira to $1.00. So if you were paying with dollars, they would end up owing you money. The next three lines are easy too. Acqua e asciugamano di tela compresso - Water and cloth towel included in the price, saponetta normale – is regular soap and it costs 5 cents, and sweet smelling Acqua di Colonia costs 25 cents. I think agevolazioni per il giovanotto means young boys get discounts but di primo pelo is a mystery. Does that mean virgin boys? Or boys that don’t shave? Help! And not to be a totally superficial slug, but I have to say they could have found a slightly more attractive girl to advertise their services, truthfully she looks like somebody’s grandmother.
