Franklin Call - Treasurer - BurnT OUT Interactive Arts Society BURNING MAN GLOBAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE FEEDBACK Three Toronto community members attended the Global Leadership Conference in San Francisco at the beginning of April. Laura as a Toronto Regional Contact, Franklin as a Toronto Community Leader, and Seth as a Community Leader for Boston & Toronto and a participant on the Fire Safety panel. Here is some feedback on our experience: FROM LAURA: The GLC is a great learning and networking opportunity. In addition to the informative sessions, its really great to hear about what is going on all around the world in all of the different burner communities. I really enjoyed the time I spent getting to know some of the folks from Alberta this year, as well as sharing ideas and getting feedback from them. It was interesting to learn about the transitions Burning Man is making, and to listen to Larry Harvey talk about his vision for this years theme. I attended the following sessions: Thinking Outside the Bar - pretty much exactly what it sounds like, planning community gatherings not at a bar, Hands on: Basic Crisis Communications - an excellent session on public relations management and recovering when things go wrong, Group Works: Tools to build & activate community - lots of different ideas and a great variety of approaches, Creativity & Change in Leadership - an interesting session where we built on ideas of how to support other leaders, I Love People, But I Hate the Public: Online Community Management - very informative talk about managing online communications and groups on Facebook, etc. If anyone wants more details on any of these sessions, let me know! FROM SETH: One focus of the GLC was on the status of the Burning Man Project and transition of Black Rock City LLC to be a part of it. For me, the most interesting part was that BRAF is merging with the Burning Man art department, allowing for 501(c)3 charitable donations to the Burning Man Project to go towards on-playa art. I attended talks primarily on public art and burn safety. There was also a talk on ticketing that I attended because of my participation with Firefly - theyve done a really great job at making the best of a bad situation and coming up with an engaging way to sell tickets that doesnt involve a 5-minute buying window. For public art, there was a lot of discussion about the FIGMENT events, particularly FIGMENT Boston. Riskee Ball got a number of shout-outs as an example of public interactive art transforming city policy: in our case, getting fire to a public event in a city that has always banned it. For burn safety, there was a talk explaining Burning Mans ESD services and infrastructure, and how other burns are running safety events for training volunteers. There was a lot of discussion about how larger regional burns are moving towards the Incident Command System - training is freely available online for both event volunteers and organizers. There was also a fire safety panel I was part of. Topics discussed included the Life Cube burn in Las Vegas, perimeter safety, safety at regional burns, engagement with emergency services personnel, and how pyrotechnics work at Burning Man. I spoke about a fire safety document repository Im working on, with the eventual goal of making a regional fire safety manual. Also, there was a lightning talk on forensic entomology that was great. ANNOUNCEMENTS: URBAN GOLF BACK ALLEY BLING, Tee off is at Rose Will Studios (1630 Dundas St west) between 3 and 6pm Saturday June 7th and plays through the streets, alleys and parks of Dundas West.
