Burt Lake native lands seized in 1900. Gennie and I took a short trip yesterday looking at the gorgeous Northern Michigan autumn landscape. In search of a historic mark called Indian Point - also known a The Burt Lake Burn-out. In the late 1800s, Indian Point was an important vacation destination for prominent folks with the Inland Waterway river system connecting their access to both Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. A rail system was also in place. Of course the sickness of greed produced visions of dollar signs. A lavish hotel was proposed and a plan to expel those delinquent in land tax would be enforced by the local sheriff. Paying taxes to own land was a strange concept to the Natives who occupied that ancestral area for hundreds of years. After the Treaty of 1836, the Natives used their annuity money to RE-PURCHASE the land. On October 15, 1900 The eviction of land parcels for non-payment of taxes.
