Burundi through Light the World Campaign:The most pressing objective now is to deliver free solar lanterns to 23 villages in the Muramvya Commune in Burundi by February 2014. We have identified 3,500 poor families with the help of our partner, Green Horizon in Burundi. There is no electricity at all and the people use kerosene lanterns for their lighting needs. These kerosene lanterns have negative effects on the population. The fumes from the lanterns result in many respiratory diseases and other health issues such as blindness; midwifes struggle to deliver babies at night; children in school perform very poorly because they don’t have access to lighting during the night when they have to study or do their homework.
