Burundian elections are approaching and the Dutch embassy has made a second tranche of money available. The money will be deposited in a basket fund, managed by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). This basket fund is supported by Belgium, France, the European Union and UNDP. Purpose of this basket fund is to support inclusive, democratic and transparent elections in 2015. The Commission Electorale Nationale Independante (CENI) is an important partner during this process. With the second disbursement of money, the Netherlands aims to contribute to a peaceful election process. The Dutch ambassador called for the government of Burundi to take its responsibility for an open and democratic election process. On the other hand, an appeal was made to the opposition to not ask the impossible of the government. The process is fragile, but dialogue between the opposition and the government is still there, an encouraging indication. As the Dutch ambassador stated: the failure of the electoral process is not an option, we want it to succeed. The second tranche for the basket fund aims to realize this goal. The photo shows the Dutch ambassador Mr. Oppewal, the director of CENI Mr. Ndayicariye and the director of UNDP Ms. Boucly.
