Bush can either own the multitude of bad decisions and dubious policies wrought forth under his tenure, and thereby don the cape of ogre, or he can plead he was not guilty by virtue of being misled and manipulated, and validate the simpleton depiction. Methinks truth lies somewhere in the middle ground: I see him as a child of privilege who shallowly indulged in that unique mindless debauchery only trust-fund babies are positioned to enjoy... Then came Laura and familial responsibilities, the party slowly ended. The remorse of an up-to-then amoral lifestyle combined with the shame of being the other son led to an overcompensating adoption of a fundamentalist moral code, one he unquestioningly accepted as that of higher authorities. And the deep rooted psychological need for parental approval drove his testosterone fueled push to be seen as a strong leader, and the unprecedented decision to engage in an ill conceived pre-emptive war. At a time in our history when we most needed wisdom in the White House, we found ourselves with George, an inwardly insecure child trying to prove he was a man, and despite his alleged good intentions, he irreparably harmed this country.
