Business Etiquette Tip of the Day: Laptops are obtrusive during meetings. The minute you sit down and open one, you have just put up a physical barrier. Your body language is already communicating disinterest. If you are using your laptop to take notes, you are not only disturbing others with the tapping of the keys, but you are losing eye contact with the speaker. Eye contact is important because it helps to convey understanding to the listener and provides necessary feedback to the speaker. If everyone in a meeting is not digitally connected, it is better to take notes the old-fashioned way. If you have no other choice but to use your laptop in a meeting, sit in the back where you will be least distracting to others.
