Business of the Year John D. Wilson opened the business Modern Cleaners with a partner in 1931. Years after the partnership was dissolved, John D. and Gladys parker were married. Gladys began to work in the business at the time while raising four children Kay, Janie, Johnny, and Chris. Johnny Wilson married Laura E. Stokes in 1968 and worked in the family business while pursuing a degree in industrial electricity. Laura joined the family at Modern Cleaners in 1976. Modern Cleaners offered dry cleaning, pressing, and laundry services along with pickup and delivery. When Gladys’ health declined in 1978, Johnny and Laura took over the family business. Modern Cleaners’ success is the epitome of a family-owned business in Opp, Alabama. Although clothing care has changed throughout the years, one aspect of the business that has not changed is the service that has been given to their dedicated customers.
